In positive psychology, Flow, also known as Zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In essence, Flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does.
I love this definition of Flow. I remember the first time I saw a the Yoga Slackers video. I was blown away how one pose moved into another and the transition became just as important as the pose itself. This week in my yoga, acroyoga personal practice as well as my teaching, I am focusing on this connection.
This video is Caralee Burton and I piecing poses together one after another. I love watching this flow toggle between strength and pause, as we transfer effort and stillness back and forth. As she and I practice together and generate sequencing, it is the same… a mental flow… where communication occurs as one shares an idea and the other listens, and then the other seeks to understand before voicing their own opinion.
My invitation to you is to find your Flow. Pay attention to the way you walk, the way you chew your food and how your body moves in conjunction with another’s, in as simple a task as shaking hands, for example. Do this and observe life become a dance of intention.
